About The University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program
Be the change you wish to see in the world...Master the Art of Teaching at the University of Chicago The University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program (UChicago UTEP) asserts that teaching is: (1) A highly ambitious, intellectual, professional career; (2) Integral to the education reform movement; and (3) A means for promoting educational equity and social justice through the training and development of classroom-based school leaders. UChicago UTEP's goal is to prepare teachers of the highest caliber for Chicago Public Schools to persist, succeed and lead in urban schools. UChicago UTEP has received prominent recognition including: (1) Acknowledgement as exemplar in clinical practice by NCATE Blue Ribbon Panel Report; (2) Receipt of $12 million Teacher Quality Partnership Grant from the US Department of Education; (3) Grant from the National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program; and (4) Ranking as #1 graduate elementary teacher program in IL by the National Council on Teacher Quality. Our 5-year retention rate results far exceed the national norms, where approximately 50% of urban public school teachers leave the profession within their first three years. In stark contrast, more than 90% of our graduates are still teaching in CPS or in similar urban school districts after five years and 100% of the Class of 2011 was hired by CPS for the 2011-2012 academic year!
