About The Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship
The Victoria League For Commonwealth Friendship works to promote friendship and hospitality between people from Commonwealth Nations. Founded in 1901, the Victoria League has branches in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand and historical links with the Daughters of the British Empire in the USA and IODE in Canada. There are currently three facets to the League. Membership services, Student House and the funding of overseas educational projects. The Headquarters in London, and the branches have a history of providing assistance throughout the Commonwealth: providing accommodation and meals for Commonwealth service men and nurses during both World Wars, equipping hospital and troop ships with libraries, providing letters of introduction for those moving abroad, welcoming new citizens to Australia and New Zealand, and hosting students from Commonwealth countries while they studied in the United Kingdom. The Victoria League Student House in London offers affordable student accommodation for full-time students aged 18-30 years old from Commonwealth countries, providing a welcoming home for 45 international students in Bayswater. We offer a program of activities in London for members and their guests. Our recent overseas projects commenced in 2012, with the financing of the construction of a secondary school in Futa, Sierra Leone. This was a jubilee project to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen. Since then we have undertaken several other projects. These include the following. • A Senior Secondary School in Futa. • Two preschools located in remote villages in Borneo, Malaysia. • For the past two years we have been working with A Partner In Education (APIE) to support Umubano Primary School in Kigali, Rwanda. • In 2020 we will continue this support with ‘recovery packs’ for pupils to aid them in their return to learning after the world pandemic.
