About The Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women
The Windsor Women Working with Immigrant Women (W5) is a non-profit organization formed in 1981 by a group of women in the city of Windsor. These women realized that new Canadians have needs that are not catered to by the existing service centre in Windsor. They brought this fact to the attention of the Government of Canada and through a grant application that presented the results of a 1981 feasibility study, which was conducted with the objective of determining the needs of new Canadians in Windsor. In the past 40+ years, W5's dedicated staff and Board of Directors have devoted their efforts in providing service for women, newcomers, job seekers, and individuals from low-income families. Services for Newcomers: -Language training classes from literacy to CLB level 5 -Settlement counselling and workshops -Mental wellness training and crisis counselling -Youth art project and homework support -Community connections -Childcare Services for Women: -Life skills training -Computer classes -Women occupational training -Knitting club -Conversation circle -Childcare Services for Job Seekers: -Pre-employment preparation training and one-on-one counselling -Job matching and job retention support -Network with local employers -Information and Resource Centre MISSION To assist immigrant and refugee women and their families to become full and participating members of Canadian Society. OBJECTIVES To provide welcoming and supportive space for newcomers and first generation Canadians. To support the settlement and advancement of newcomers and first generation Canadians. To identify and eliminate systemic barriers faced by immigrants and refugees. To provide culturally sensitive settlement services focusing on the needs of newcomers and first generation Canadians.
