About ThisGirlCan Initiative Kenya

ThisGirlCan Initiative is a Community Based Organization (CBO) that works at the grassroots to alleviate period poverty and period stigma/shame. We acknowledge that menstrual health is a fundamental human right, linked to multiple SDGs. Therefore, addressing menstrual health and hygiene (MHM) is crucial for achieving progress in areas like good health (SDG 3) education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5) and sanitation (SDG 6) From the work we do, we have collected data demonstrating that lack of sanitary towels and other period products has a direct link to school absenteeism for many girls from low-income households in Kenya. For many of these young girls, period poverty is their reality. We carry out advocacy and awareness on menstrual health rights, calling for recognition as a human right rather than a hygiene issue. To this end, we: - Co-ordinate and organize community outreach programs to educate about menstrual health matters. - Engage with stakeholders and like-minded organizations on possible partnerships. - Mobilize resources for procuring of sanitary towels for distribution in schools.
