We are a short term mission agency with a vision to inspire and enable a wave of “starfish throwers”, to make an impact on physical and spiritual poverty - one person at a time. Most short term mission opportunities involve joining a team which will undertake a relatively simple task in which everyone can do something regardless of skills. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT? We focus on using the gifts and availability of individuals, rather than recruiting teams for projects. Working with established projects and trusted partners, where we have an ongoing relationship, enables us to place individuals in projects at a time convenient to the volunteer, hence increasing the number of potential starfish throwers. We try not to use tourist hotels! As well as keeping costs down, accommodating volunteers in guesthouses or with local families enables them to experience normal life and integrate better into these communities. WHAT COULD IT LOOK LIKE TO "THROW A STARFISH? A nurse travels to Zambia for two weeks to train specialist cardiac nurses. An early retired drainage engineer travels to Romania to design a sewage treatment system for a small village clinic. A clergyman, on sabbatical, spends a month teaching church leaders in Kenya. A systems analyst travels to Sierra Leone to review the way an organisation currently collect data from their community development activities and help design a new system for data collection and recording. A researcher from a UK research institution, visits a research base in Kenya, to exchange information and experience in the area of developing drought resistant crops.
