The disfiguring procedure and fear that followed reframed the family’s view on the sun — and left their mom spending vacations in the shade wearing bulky, unfashionable sun-protective clothing. Kelly and Laura were determined to find a safer and more stylish way for their mom to enjoy the sun, allowing her to spend special time with her children and grandchildren — without jeopardizing her health. They wanted her to feel empowered, stylish, and comfortable. They quickly realized they wanted all women, including themselves, to feel confident, beautiful, and comfortable in the sun. The realities of skin cancer forced Kelly and Laura to reevaluate their relationship with sunwear. The limited options they found — unflattering rash guards and unfashionable technical clothing — first disappointed and then inspired them. They realized they could fill a gap in the market and create something better for conscientious, style-conscious sunseekers. The result: Tied, a brand of fashionable and functional UPF 50+ sun-safe clothing, formed on the sisters’ belief that protecting our skin from the sun shouldn’t mean hiding from its rays.
