Speech therapists address the pragmatics of social skills such as body language and eye contact. My program addresses the educational core of social skills such as attentive listening, problem solving, self esteem, friendships, dealing with feelings, self control, conflict, family, community and more. By explaining the skill in a fun, interactive way the student is able to retain the information. Also, my social skills students don't get homework but their parents do. The parent homework is an explanation given to the parent on how to generalize the skill the student just attained into their real world. I give helpful hints and activities for the parent/caregiver to do with the child to reinforce the skill they just learned. My students love it so much they always make me wait until they get their parents to see the slide before I end the class. Don't worry parents/caregivers...I also email out a summary of the class along with the information given on the parent homework slide. According to new statistics released by the CDC, 1 in 68 individuals have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
