About Transformative Justice Community
The Transformative Justice Community (TJC) is working to interrupt cycles of violence and harm to promote lives of meaning and connection, developing healthy communities. We are doing this work through our three programs: ReGroup, the Resilience Project, and CREW. ReGroup is a reentry support and empowerment program that promotes healing and growth for those who have experienced incarceration. This is accomplished through monthly support group and networking meetings that have expanded to include regular workshops and ad-hoc community engagement outings; peer support specialists who are formerly incarcerated credible messengers who meet returning citizens outside the prison/jail after their release and help identify needed resources and support; and diverse reentry preparation in prisons before release. Resilience Project is a wrap-around approach using multiple initiatives that intervene directly with youth impacted by familial incarceration while also bolstering their support system. This is accomplished through an after-school program for middle-school youth experiencing familial incarceration; a mentoring/tutoring in-school support program for students at risk of dropping out; a parenting class for incarcerated parents that equips participants with skills and strategies for healthy communication and relationships between incarcerated parents and their children; and in-service training for teachers and counselors to better support their students impacted by familial incarceration. CREW (Connecting Resources to Empower Women) focuses on incarcerated women who are being recruited or forced into sex trafficking during their time in prison or upon their release. We provide programming within the prison to help women heal from previous trauma, violence, and abuse; and we work to ensure that women have safe rides upon release.
