About Trauma Informed First Aid

Attending First Aid Training following a traumatic event can be daunting. Will the training remind me of the traumatic experience? How will I respond if I get triggered? What support is available to me if I can’t cope? Avoiding First Aid Training doesn’t mean you will avoid situations where that training could save someone’s life… It takes courage to step forwards to help in an emergency, especially if you are struggling with past events. Trauma Informed First Aid aims to give you the tools and support that you need to step forwards in an emergency. In my courses, we will explore the ‘Fight, Flight, First Aid’ response, First Aid assessment and treatment and how to take care of yourself following an emergency. You will also get the chance to meet Sunny and Hugo, certified Therapy Dogs. My Story I formerly worked as a First Aid Trainer for the British Red Cross. Following a serious traffic accident, I struggled with my mental health and found that delivering First Aid Training was triggering traumatic memories of the accident. The Red Cross supported me to complete my L3 Award in Training and Education, but I was unable to carry on with First Aid Training on a regular basis. During my time with the Red Cross, I became aware that a number of students also struggled with their own past trauma in the context of First Aid. I want to be able to provide a safe space for you to learn First Aid, where it's OK to cry, leave the room or share your story - I've been there too. The course will also explore de-stressor activities, debriefs and post-traumatic care to promote your wellbeing as a First Aider.
