TraumAid International's ongoing research into the impact of trauma following large-scale disasters has led to the development of the Ecological Trauma Theory, the development of cross-cultural teaching materials and a model of community-based trauma mitigation following large-scale disasters. The model involves education on how the brain, body and community are impacted by trauma followed by a culturally relevant community intervention to promote healing and healthy development of the brain, body and community life. All interventions, while based on the principles of the model, are developed in collaboration with the particular community impacted by the disaster. The aim of the Ecological Trauma Model is to not only heal and rebuild communities affected by large-scale disaster but to also promote positive growth so that the cycle of violence is broken and the community is even more resilient and functional than before disaster struck. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda are two countries in which the model has been successfully implemented.
