In 1989, Monmouth, Oregon, there was a friendly, short-order cook by the name of Mel Budder. He would often speak of an old Western Oregon legend. It was a story about a warrior that would emerge only when the rains threatened flood warnings and rampant destruction. No matter how hard it rained, nor that he lacked any extraordinary or supernatural powers (other than his innate ability to swing a pulaski with absolute precision), he always showed up to do his job. "Daily," grunted Mel as the cigarette dangled from his lips. "He didn't complain 'bout it -- Didn't belly-ache. He wouldn't eat or sleep, neither. Despite his anonymity and blunt candor, he was always there for ya in the long run...digging away at dirt as hard as concrete on a cold, drizzling February night". It was usually at this point of the story when Mel's eyes would begin to tear up. "But whenever there was an emergency--", he continued, " --a flash flood maybe, or even a fire... a hurricane... an invasion from outer space; it didn't matter! Nothing was gonna deter that poor freak from digging his trench!" And that's why Mel Budder could always remain confident in his one, faithful & true friend; a creature bristling with calm determination, a diligent work ethic, and a broad knowledge of erosion control techniques.
