The human collagens are a family of 28 triple-helical proteins forming vertebrates' most abundant protein group. Their defining Gly-X-Y repeating sequence confers triple-helical structure on the collagens. Far from inert, collagens must offer specific interaction sites for other matrix components. Evolutionarily formed signatures within the primary GXY sequence of collagen enable it to play roles in cell anchoring, survival, and function that are fundamental to the integrity of the extracellular matrix.
