About Trips for Kids Charlotte
Trips For Kids Charlotte is a nonprofit organization (est. 2000) focused on providing the community with a resource for bicycle safety, mechanical education, and equitable access to bicycles for recreation and transportation. Our mission is to transform lives, communities and landscapes through cycling. We believe the bicycle is a tool for physical, mental and social change! TFKC’s goal is to promote self-confidence, exploration, and healthy life practices for ALL through the use of the bicycle. The bicycle can be a vehicle for exercise, therapy, transcending barriers of location to access food, jobs and opportunity… and most importantly, a vehicle for FUN! We focus our program opportunities to historically marginalized communities and areas of need identified by the county to address chronic health diseases in youth. At the core of our organization are the following 3 programs: Youth Ride Program: Programs that engage youth with nature through mountain biking and the urban landscape through greenway rides. Earn-a-Bike Program (EAB): Free Youth and Family opportunities to earn a bicycle, helmet, lock and lights through completing a bike safety class. Charlotte Re-Cyclery: Community Bike Shop that acts as a resource for mechanical education, repair and equitable access to bicycles. In 2023, TFKC/Charlotte Re-Cyclery purchased a new space at 812 Atando Ave (28206). We aspire to create an inclusive community hub centered on access to bicycles and bicycle education. Trips for Kids Charlotte / Charlotte Re-Cyclery operates within the circular economy by annually diverting over 3,500 bicycles from Charlotte’s landfills and refurbishing them into opportunities for transportation, recreation, and mechanics education.
