About UBC Law and Society Chats

The Law and Society Minor is a multidisciplinary program, providing undergraduate students the opportunity to understand the law as a social phenomenon. This unique minor is suited to those interested in law, governance, and social issues. The multidisciplinary approach of this program allows students to take relevant courses in Anthropology, Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies, First Nations Studies, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Sociology, and Women’s Studies and Gender Relations to understand socio-legal scholarship under religious, historical, social, and political contexts. Our club, Law and Society Chats (LASOC), through support by the department and faculty of the Law and Society Minor, has the intention to raise awareness about the Law and Society minor program, yet hopes to expand knowledge on the role of law in our everyday lives. Moreover, LASOC intends on taking advantage of the academic lectures that approach the topic of law and society around campus by attending the lectures and having educated and opinionated discussions afterwards. By attending lectures on the wide topics of socio-legal scholarship, such as the Law and Society Lecture Series, and Centre for Feminist Legal Studies Lecture Series in Allard Hall, students in the club will be directly exposed to the academic nature of the Law and Society Minor. While the club will have an academic focus, we hope to bring together students of a variety of disciplines in a social setting to evoke academic discussions. It would allow students to actively be a part of an intellectual community geared towards the globally interconnected world we find ourselves in today.
