About Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival
The Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival (UCMF) showcases Ukraine’s complex and unique contributions to contemporary music through performance and discussion with scholars, musicians, and composers. The festival engages the intersection of new music, contemporary events, and the culture of Ukraine. According to the New York Times, “[T]he festival’s very existence has always been a rejection of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia’s assertion that there is no real Ukrainian culture.” UCMF’s vision is to bring the exciting variety of compositions by living Ukrainian composers into dialogue with NYC’s vibrant new music scene. Although Ukrainian culture and music is informed by a rich diversity of peoples, languages, and traditions, it is little known outside of Ukraine and even less well-known as a network of styles and approaches connected by the land from which it comes. UCMF puts Ukrainian music into the hands of American musicians and into the ears of American audiences
