About University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Veterinary Medicine
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is in the process of establishing the state’s first School of Veterinary Medicine, currently seeking accreditation through the American Veterinary Medical Association-Council on Education. Once accredited, it will be the first veterinary school at a public Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and a transformative addition to UMES’s robust health professions programs—the most among HBCUs nationwide. Slated to welcome its first cohort in Fall 2026, pending accreditation, the UMES School of Veterinary Medicine aims to address the growing demand for veterinarians regionally and nationally while fostering greater diversity in the profession. As one of the nation’s 1890 land-grant institutions, UMES is committed to advancing animal health, food security, and public health through innovative education, research, and service.
