Unsilenced is committed to closing the knowledge gap and establishing an equal power balance between pediatric providers and patients & families by highlighting the need for alternative diagnostic measures, standardized protocol for voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG), and legally enforceable standards for obtaining informed consent from pediatric patients and parents. We hope to unite with medical organizations in pursuit of a shared goal: to protect the health and well-being of our children. Unsilenced aims to highlight the overdue need for improvement in vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) diagnosis and treatment through our 5-series mission: 1. Establishing standardized protocol for VCUG performance, including consistent criteria for referrals (e.g. medical necessity); procedural steps and administration; and recording of test results. 2. Securing adequate funding, research, and overall effort in medical communities to establish a better “gold standard” of care for VUR patients and their loved ones. 3. Holding healthcare providers accountable for disclosing ALL reasonable information to meet their ethical obligations under the informed consent doctrine. 4. Ensuring that pediatric patients and parents have knowledge and access to alternative measures of care that may be medically appropriate, such as PIC, ceVUS, and renal ultrasound. 5. Preventing medical professionals from advocating AGAINST alternative measures of care that are perfectly appropriate for certain pediatric patients and their families.
