About UNSW Mending Broken Hearts

Mending Broken Hearts (MBH) is a student-led engineering initiative developing a Total Artificial Heart (TAH) to compete in the Heart Hackathon, the world’s first TAH design challenge. Established in 2022, MBH is a team of 40 students across Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Systems sub-teams. Our mission is to advance artificial heart technology while inspiring the next generation of biomedical engineers. Since its inception, MBH has gained international recognition. In 2023, we attended the Heart Hackathon Finals in Dallas, Texas, proudly representing UNSW on the global stage. In 2024, we competed in Utsunomiya, Japan, securing 3rd place among top university teams worldwide. These achievements highlight our team's rapid progress in artificial heart design and innovation. As part of the UNSW VIP Program, MBH engages in initiatives like Sci-Fest, Education Festival, and VIP Breakfast. Our award-winning VIP video placed 1st in the International VIP Consortium, surpassing 50 institutions from 14 countries and gaining global recognition. We have also achieved 1st place at the UNSW Education Festival VIP Pitch Competition two years in a row (2023, 2024). As a UNSW Arc Club, MBH also participates in events like O-Week, Launch Week, and Clubs Takeover. In December 2025, MBH will compete in the Heart Hackathon Finals in Vienna, Austria, aiming to push the boundaries of artificial heart technology. We invite industry partners to support us in achieving this goal and revolutionizing life-saving healthcare.
