About UQ Women in Science Association
According to the United Nations, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Globally, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3% of students are female), natural science, mathematics and statistics (5% of students are female) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (8% of students are female). Thanks to numerous organisations across the globe, these numbers are now on the rise- but it's going to be a gradual and challenging change. Inspired by these facts, the UQ Women in Science Association (WiSA) was born. WiSA is a student-led association, started in 2016 (originally 'SciGirls'). Our goal is to create a safe space where the achievements of women of all career stages in science are encouraged and celebrated - providing them with opportunities for career advancement and also enabling them to serve as role models for young girls in science. We achieve this by providing networking opportunities to connect students with successful females in the field. We also hold numerous social events throughout the year, in order to create a community for female science students and female scientists to feel safe and supported throughout their degree. We are always excited to get ourselves involved with community science, women in science, and school events when possible.
