About Urban Teaching Corps Inc

The mission of Urban Teaching Corps is to develop a corps of talented, passionate and committed future educators, who are prepared to dedicate themselves to teaching urban youth and closing the achievement gap. A shortage of talented educators impedes education reform in America. Insufficient numbers of college students enter the teaching profession and even for those who do choose to teach, turnover is extremely high especially in urban schools. To develop great schools, we must address the lack of truly excellent teachers - particularly excellent teachers of color - working in underserved communities. To date, 80% of Urban Teaching Corps’ apprentices have been people of color, compared with only 14% of all teachers nationwide. A shortage of talented educators impedes education reform in America.
