About UrbanPromise Nashville
OUR MISSION Our mission is to show the love of Jesus to refugees by helping them heal, learn, and direct their own future for good. THE GLOBAL CHALLENGE At the end of 2021, the total number of people worldwide who were forced to flee their homes due to conflicts, violence, and human rights violations was 89.3 million. 45 million are children who stop going to school to seek safety, which puts them at risk of missing out on education for years. THE LOCAL CHALLENGE Nashville has the most diverse school system in the state, drawing refugees from all over the world. Nearly 60,000 refugees have found a home in the city's south side. One-third of this group are school age. These students are English language learners and have some form of interrupted education. As you can imagine, many refugees are struggling in school. THE NEED IS MULTILAYERED Access to Education: Refugee youth lack access to sustained targeted intervention needed to address significant academic gaps. Underlying trauma: Refugee children have higher rates of trauma than children who are not transnational. While youth are incredibly resilient, trauma has a significant negative impact on emotional health, school performance, and general well-being. Lost Community: When refugees flee their home they leave behind family and community. When they arrive in the US they have to start over. OUR MODEL Reach a Child: Through our after school and summer camp program, UPN provides academic intervention, social-emotional learning, spiritual guidance and mentorship. The integration of these four core pillars distinguishes UPN and drives transformative outcomes for our students. Raise a Leader: Through our StreetLeader program, UPN employs high school refugee students to serve as leaders and mentors of the of the after school and summer camp program. This is more than a job. These teens receive leadership development, spiritual development, college counseling, and 1:1 mentorship.
