We are two geopolitical analysts, one Mexican and one American, whose friendship was born out of a common interest in US-Mexico relations and the role of our two countries in an ever-changing world. The United States and Mexico share one of the longest borders in the world, and their respective cultural and economic prospects are intimately linked. Unfortunately, however, while few would deny the importance of US-Mexico relations, the discourse on the subject often localizes itself in a limited arena of narrow questions, failing to encapsulate the breadth of both past and present exchanges between both countries. However, the relationship between the United States and Mexico is not merely one between Washington DC and Mexico City. Bilateral relations always exist within the context of multilateral relations. For example, NAFTA could not have been formed without Canada. Moving forward, we believe that China will play an immensely important multilateral role in US-Mexico relations. Amidst an increasingly uncertain relationship between China and the United States, the mutual importance of Mexico to both countries will only increase. In turn, for Mexico itself, a healthy equilibrium in its relations with both China and the United States ranks second to none in terms of its geopolitical priorities.
