About USS IDAHO SSN 799 Commissioning Committee
The USS IDAHO SSN 799 is a Virginia class fast-attack submarine currently under construction at General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut. She is the fifth vessel named Idaho. Her most recent predecessor, USS Idaho BB-42 was a 32,000-ton New Mexico class battleship that was commissioned in March 1919. Nicknamed the "Big Spud," USS Idaho BB-42 was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan formerly surrendered in 1945. She was decommissioned in July 1946. The USS IDAHO SSN 799 is designed to meet the national and global security challenges of our time. She is expected to be christened between winter 2023 and spring 2024 and is anticipated to be commissioned in 2025. The USS IDAHO SSN 799 Commissioning Committee brings together the people of the great State of Idaho and the Officers and Crew of the USS IDAHO to celebrate in exemplary fashion the extraordinary honor of having a ship of the line named for the state. It works to create a bond between the people of Idaho and the sailors of the submarine that will last throughout the life of the ship and beyond. It recognizes with great honor, the men and women that have served and will serve throughout the history of the land we now call Idaho. The USS Idaho Commissioning Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations to the organization will cover the costs of Commissioning activities, events leading up to and including Commissioning Week as well as habitability improvements, memorials and support programs for the crew and families. Our fundraising goals include funding scholarships for the USS IDAHO Crew and their families via the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation. The Scholarship Foundation's charter is; easing the financial burden of undergraduate and vocational education for eligible members of the U.S. Submarine Force and their dependents (http://dolphinscholarship.org)
