About VASH Hawaii Island

VASH Hawaii Island is The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaiʻi Island. “Caring for Visitors Touched by Adversities.” We are a Big Island non-profit organization that was established in 2002. VASH Hawaii Island is dedicated to promoting and sharing the Aloha Spirit with every traveler that has experienced hardship while visiting the Big Island. We want every visitor to feel welcomed, supported, and safe during their time on the island. Since opening our doors (and hearts), we have assisted more than 20,000 visitors, including support to more than 400 death cases. The adversities they faced were varied, including: kidnapping, physical assault, sexual assault, attempted suicide, suicide, attempted murder, murder, near drowning, drowning and death from other causes, medical emergencies, lodging scams, vehicle theft, rental car and lodging break-ins, being stranded, and lost and stolen items. VASH Hawaii Islandʻs aid includes providing emotional support, emergency transportation and lodging, clothing, food, medical equipment loans, interpreters, and more. By stepping in to provide this assistance, VASH Hawaii Island supports our already thinly-stretched police and health workers by relieving them of the need to help travelers beyond their professional responsibilities. VASH Hawaii Island has also long supported the tourism industry by educating travelers on physical and health safety issues that are unique to our island, lessening the strain on the EMS system. Throughout all of our support to our visitors-in-need, we hope the end result is that they will go home feeling the Aloha Spirit within them, even though they faced adversity while here.
