About Vatican Cyber Volunteers
We are the Vatican Cyber Volunteers. Likened by the media to a modern-day "digital Swiss Guard," we are a global group of talented cybersecurity professionals who work daily in leading companies and organizations. We dedicate our personal time and expertise to a unique mission: bolstering the cyber defenses of Vatican City. We provide crucial, pro-bono consultancy, hands-on services like penetration testing and threat intelligence sharing, and offer vital cloud infrastructure for free or at cost. Our mission is rooted in the principle articulated by Pope Francis: "The freedom and protection of privacy of individuals are precious goods, called to harmonize with the common good of society." The Vatican's digital footprint has expanded steadily since its main website, www.vatican.va, launched in 1995. This sprawling system under the ‘.va’ domain is vital for global communication but has made it a prime target. The threat is persistent and sophisticated. In 2012, the hacktivist group Anonymous briefly disabled key sites, and in 2020, reports surfaced of suspected state-sponsored hackers targeting Vatican networks. The need to secure these digital assets is undeniable, and we are honored to help meet this challenge. Our work is guided and inspired by our patron, Blessed Carlo Acutis. A faith-filled and gifted Italian computer programmer who became a "cyber-apostle" by using his digital talents to evangelize online, Carlo is a powerful example of harnessing technology for good. His patronage fuels our commitment to defending the Church in the digital age. Ultimately, we are motivated by a profound spirit of service. We strive to be what Pope Francis calls "builders of peace and harmony," describing volunteers across the globe as "a living witness of the tenderness of Christ, who walks with humanity in every era." We are humbled to be a part of this tradition, applying our unique skills to protect the Church and its universal mission.
