About Vermont College of Fine Arts
We believe that the arts are central to the human experience and have the ability not only to reflect reality, but also to create it. As the only graduate institution devoted exclusively to fine arts education in the low-residency mentorship model, the Vermont College of Fine Arts offers six MFA programs to its community in Film, Graphic Design, Music Composition, Visual Art, Writing, and Writing for Children & Young Adults. Rooted in our foundational belief in the importance of individualized arts education, the low-residency mentorship model starts students on their VCFA journey at a week-long residency experience on the Valencia, California campus of our affiliate partner institution, CalArts. At residency, our network of artists engage in lectures, workshops, critiques, readings, screenings, performances, exhibitions, and cross-disciplinary networking events. Before the end of the week, students are paired with their faculty advisor, a seasoned industry professional and educator who will be a student’s one-on-one mentor for six months. Once at home, VCFA students focus on their individualized study plan and goals for the semester, developing new work and receiving detailed feedback and guidance from their advisors. In the flow of residency and semester work, filmmakers, designers, composers, visual artists, and writers develop new projects, strengthen their portfolios, refine their voice and craft, and expand their creative network. Whatever your choice of study, at VCFA, you’ll emerge with a dynamic new vision of yourself, your work, and the world around you.
