Never has being a young person been such a challenge as it is today. All our experience of growing up is so far removed from what they experience today that we might have grown up on a different planet! The pressure from social media, technology, information overload, a heightened sensory environment, a school system that is underfunded, outdated and driven by numbers not the development of balanced, happy, confident young people. Parents are doing their best; teachers are working with what they have within a web of rules and government guidelines and support services overwhelmed. The perfect storm. Some children seem sail through, but many don’t, they feel overwhelmed, they don’t feel they belong, at school, in social groups and sometimes at home. They feel uncomfortable with who they are. This manifests itself as stress, anxiety and lack of motivation. Every week I speak to parents who are at their wits end, their children are hard to live with or struggling with life. These parents are worried, they feel helpless and don’t know what to do. They start questioning their parenting ability and feel guilty that they may have done something wrong. That’s when they call me. I work with their children, quickly building trust so they feel comfortable to share their emotions, their thoughts, and their struggles. Together we build new habits, focus on want they want life to be like, and how they can achieve that. The result? A happy, confident young person who is easy to live with… ok reality check, they are teenagers, let’s go for a lot easier to live with.
