About Virginia Health Care Foundation
The Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) is a non-profit, public/private partnership initiated by the General Assembly and its Joint Commission on Health Care 33 years ago as an integral part of the Commonwealth’s approach to ensuring that all Virginians have access to the health care they need. As the only statewide health foundation in the Commonwealth, VHCF is committed to meeting the diverse needs of communities and populations throughout Virginia. VHCF programs and initiatives focus on providing medical, behavioral health (BH), dental services and prescription medicines to low-income uninsured and medically underserved Virginians. VHCF support helps free clinics, community health centers, and a variety of local human and social services organizations expand both the types of care offered and the number of patients/clients cared for each year. Since 1992, VHCF’s partnerships and programs have touched the lives of more than 900,000 uninsured and medically underserved Virginians. Its programs include grants to increase access to basic behavioral health services, dental care and medical treatments; funding for Medication Assistance Caseworkers, who obtain free prescription medicines for income eligible patients from the pharmaceutical companies Patient Assistance Program; and grants for 21 Outreach Workers who help low-income individuals and families apply for and remain enrolled in Virginia’s Medicaid and FAMIS health insurance programs. VHCF is also addressing Virginia’s mental health crisis with programs to increase the number of licensed therapists via its Boost! program and psychiatric nurse practitioners via its Psych NP Scholarship program. Boost! removes the financial barriers to licensure for those who have earned a master’s degree in social work or counseling and cannot proceed to become licensed, because they cannot afford to pay for the supervision of clinical hours required for licensure.
