About Visioning Beyond Violence
Mission: Visioning Beyond Violence (VBV) prevents gun violence by empowering communities to create solutions through art, education, dialogue, and trauma-informed systems change. We cultivate visionary thinking and provide tools so people, especially youth, can heal, lead, and redesign conditions for safety and belonging. Values: We uphold nonviolence, equity, respect, and integrity. We center those most impacted, empowering individuals and communities. We believe visionary art can spark systemic change. We foster dialogue and collaboration across differences. What we imagine together, we can build. Vision: VBV is a network of changemakers who prevent gun violence by engaging people, particularly youth, in uplifting visions of safety, equity, and compassion, and by catalyzing community-led action that addresses root causes. Our programs: illuminate the systemic drivers of violence with an inclusive lens; build advocacy, leadership, and civic voice; and close educational gaps by sharing our models and training with partners. VBV is a national leader that: • develops arts-integrated approaches that strengthen social-emotional skills and mental-health practices, repair harm, and cultivate belonging; • builds coalitions with schools and community organizations to advance policy and place-based solutions to a public-health crisis that is now the leading cause of death for U.S. children and teens; • equips educators, families, legislators, and community members to use VBV’s models and tools; • is recognized for the Addressing Gun Violence curriculum for middle and high schools; and • exhibits powerful artistic visions in public spaces such as city halls, libraries, schools, museums, marches, and vigils that educate, unite, and sustain collective action to prevent gun violence.
