About Visit Virginia City - Virginia City Tourism Commission (VCTC)

Virginia City, Nevada, is located 40 minutes from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, 45 minutes from North Lake Tahoe and 25 minutes from the state capital, Carson City. This page is for the Virginia City Tourism Commission (VCTC), the official destination marketing organization for Virginia City and Storey County, Nevada. Like many cities in Nevada, Virginia City was a mining boomtown with more than $400 million in gold and silver mined during its heyday in the late 1800s. The 19th-century mining bonanza turned Virginia City into the most important industrial city between Denver and San Francisco, and it turned destitute prospectors from all over the world into millionaires. The riches helped finance the Civil War and went on to build empires around the world, including San Francisco, a city built with Comstock silver. Not much of the town has changed since. Visitors stroll our authentic board sidewalks, grab a cold one at an old-time saloon, go into an old mine, dive deeper into our history through the 13 museums, dine and, of course, stay the night. The town is designated a National Historic Landmark with no franchises or neon lights remaining true to its heritage. For small meetings and groups of up to 200 people, the VCTC is available to assist with arrangements at its rental facilities, as well as provide sample itineraries designed to help with adding to the meeting or as additional activities for attendees. For event and meeting planners, customized programs fit your planned schedule needs including docent-led tours or other unique additions to immerse attendees in the living history of this one-of-a-kind venue. Facilities available for rent include Piper’s Opera House, the Freight Depot, the Gold Hill Depot and the Virginia City Arena & Fairgrounds. For details, contact visitorinfo@storeycounty.org.
