This is a freelance Owner's estimating service provided on an ad hoc basis for project developers to assure early-stage engineering contractor's estimates, starting with key engineering decisions to help optimise the design, and then guide the formulation of the estimates so that they become more transparent and are easily understood for decision making and strategy discussions. All this is done in close collaboration with the early engineering contractor. Using the engineering contractor's estimate, I also develop the Owner's estimate, which includes owner's costs and everything else that is generally excluded by the engineering contractor, and suitably present it for any investment or board discussions with options and ranges. I also develop simple Monte-Carlo risk analysis of the estimates even at a Class4 (FEL2) stage to see what level of contingency would be appropriate and support the maturing of the contingency until FID to support the financing process. Using the initial estimate, I also help in coming up with flexible estimating templates for quick order-of-magnitude estimates for a different capacity or technology if the project needs that for early-stage pivoting, especially FOAK energy transition and cleantech projects which are yet to reach FID. I also provide training of estimators and non-estimators along with customised estimating workshops.
