Mission: We exist to provide educational opportunities for vulnerable women and children by empowering them with the skills and values to build a prosperous future. Vision: Through inspiring locally led development and creating opportunities, we envision self sustainability, thriving communities, and the empowerment of women and children. The Need: At its core, Wajoli Foundation exists to provide opportunities for women and children living in severe poverty in Uganda. Our initial aim was to improve literacy for rural children. 30% of children aged 6 - 12 are not in school, and for those who are, many face major challenges in literacy. Without proficiency in English, students struggle to pass exams or navigate basic adult responsibilities, like reading a simple land contract. Yet, in rural areas, opportunities to learn to read and write remain limited. Through our work, we became aware of the many injustices faced by women and girls. Women are the backbone of Uganda’s economy and society. However, 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence, with many suffering abuse within their own homes. For girls in rural areas, far less are likely to finish their education compared to boys. Only 1 in 5 girls complete secondary school. So this has become our core mission – to build a strong community of educated women and girls, who can financially support their children, read picture books to their children, and provide their children with dignity and purpose.
