About Walled City of Lahore Authority
The Walled City of Lahore Authority was established by the Government of the Punjab in April 2012. Previously a small project by the name of Sustainable development of walled city Lahore project was initiated in 2006 by the Government of Punjab in collaboration with the World Bank. The same project was merged into the WCLA in 2012. Under this Act, a new municipal authority—the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) was created as an autonomous body dedicated to run the urban management functions of the entire Walled City of Lahore. The objectives of the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) under the ACT are: 1. Identification and the artistic value and authenticity of the heritage of the Walled City of Lahore 2. Conservation, rehabilitation and enhancement of the heritage of the Walled City of Lahore. 3. Prepare a Master plan for conservation and restoration of the heritage of Walled City of Lahore. 4. To plan, develop and maintain infrastructure and utility services as part of the conservation of the heritage of Walled City of Lahore by providing adequate access through streets, roads, safe pipelines for water and sewerage as well as related electricity and communication networks. 5. Temporary take-over of private Buildings by the Authority for restoration of original heritage and then return to owner/occupant 6. Promotion of tourism in Walled City of Lahore 7. Promotion of cultural activity in the Walled City of Lahore The Shahi Guzargah or Royal Trail Project was launched in 2012 by the Walled City of Lahore Authority. In its interventions, the project has been an extremely complex but rich and rewarding one. Beginning from Delhi Gate, WCLA has restored 1.6km long stretch of the heritage trail leading up to Masti Gate opposite Akbari Gate of Lahore Fort. The trail comprises 99 streets, 700 Houses and 509 shops. The Project encompassed the rehabilitation of the street facades of all the properties along with the infrastructure
