Wellfleet Shellfish Promotion and Tasting (S.P.A.T.) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 2002 the year after the first Wellfleet OysterFest. The organization's mission is to preserve Wellfleet’s rich shellfishing history, to protect the environment which supports the viability of this industry and to promote the uniqueness of Wellfleet Oysters as the leading brand and to maximize growth in the industry. S.P.A.T. achieves this by: - Investing in a College Scholarship Program to help students pursuing careers in shellfishing, marine sciences or a related field. - Protecting the environment to care for and help maintain the fragile ecosystem so necessary for shellfishing - Supporting shellfishing families in times of need during challenging economic times. -Promoting the Wellfleet brand identity to influence markets and increase demand, ensuring viability long term for Wellfleet oysters. To date over $736,000 has been reinvested back into the community through the college scholarship program, community grant awards and other industry related initiatives.
