West Marin is a sparsely populated, unincorporated, 325 sq. mi. rural area comprising 65% of the land mass of Marin County, California. Over 40% of the population is over 60 yr. The poverty rate is high, with roughly 40% of the population in Unincorporated Marin County being considered Low, Very Low, or Extremely Low Income. This demographic is growing. There is no service from “Meals on Wheels” programs such as those in the urban corridor of the County. The WMSS Home Delivered Meal (HDM) program is a critical nutritional lifeline for the homebound population. A total of 7 fresh, nutritional meals in several deliveries each week can be provided, according to need - following initial client intake and continuing assessment by WMSS Case Managers. As with all WMSS programs, there is no charge for this service. Volunteers are utilized to the greatest extent possible and are recruited, background-checked, and trained, and paid staff supplement packing and deliveries to more remote and difficult-to-reach areas. WMSS protocol requires a “warm hand-off” for meal delivery as a check-in on client health, welfare, and utilization of meals. Isolation and loneliness are constant dangers for this population, especially the 48% who live alone in this rural setting, and HDM delivery is a significant opportunity for contact and socialization.
