About Wet Tropics Management Authority
OUR VISION: To protect the values of the Wet Tropics through collaboration, culture, knowledge and passion OUR MISSION: Lead, inspire, advise and support the Australian and global community to protect and share the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in perpetuity The Wet Tropics Management Authority (the Authority) was established to ensure Australia’s obligation under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention is met, in relation to the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area (the Area). The Authority is a body corporate, with statutory powers defined under the Wet Tropics World Heritage Protection and Management Act 1993. The Authority’s functions are fully defined under section 10 of the Act, and include: • develop and implement policies, plans and programs for management of the Area • formulate performance indicators for the implementation of approved policies and programs • advise, make recommendations and report to the relevant ministers on the state of the Area • facilitate and enter into cooperative management agreements • rehabilitate and restore the Area • gather, research, analyse and disseminate information on the Area • develop public and community education programs • promote the Area locally, nationally and internationally • monitor the state of the Area. The Authority performs its functions in a way that protects the Area’s natural heritage values and is consistent with the World Heritage Convention and relevant legislation. The Authority receives funding from the Australian and Queensland governments.
