About What We Choose To Remember (film)
What We Choose To Remember is a documentary film project produced in collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada, CBC and MAtv. The film is available free of charge for educational purposes. The English version is available on YouTube https://whatwechoosetoremember.ca/ The subtitled French version Ce qu’on choisit de se souvenir is available on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7sxSKxhmDg&ab_channel=ELANquebec The first phase of the project was Waves of Change a six episode documentary series broadcast on MAtv (2021), followed by Waves of Change: Reimagining Quebec, produced for CBC (2022). The feature length documentary What We Choose To Remember, produced in collaboration with the NFB, was selected as the opening film at the 2022 Hudson Film Festival. What We Choose To Remember is an investigation of contemporary Quebec history from the perspective of Anglophones and Allophones. Given the impossibility of representing every ethnic and linguistic community among a highly diverse population exceeding one million people, the project interviewed groups based upon waves of immigration. Shared social, political and economic factors within each period made the experiences of the selected participants representative of other populations not directly represented. The film’s interviewees speak about why their families chose to live in Quebec and their subsequent experiences with education, employment and languages. Descendants of families that came in the earliest waves of immigration share memories from their arrival through to the years of the Quiet Revolution, FLQ violence and a new social contract from Bill 101 up to Bill 96. Families from recent waves of immigration share their surprise that the French/English debate continues to loom large in politics while other urgent issues demand attention.
