About Whiz Kids of Oklahoma
Founded in 1996, under the umbrella of the 501(c) 3 nonprofit, City Care, Whiz Kids is a nonprofit, one-on-one, tutoring and mentoring program for at-risk students in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The mission of Whiz Kids is to improve the well-being of inner-city youth through academic tutoring and positive mentoring relationships. Whiz Kids addresses Oklahoma City's urban social and educational crisis by matching tutor/mentors with at-risk students. Teachers select students for the Whiz Kids program because they are reading below their grade level and can benefit from a mentoring relationship. Tutors are paired with a child and meet weekly during the school year for a one-on-one after-school tutoring session. Whiz Kids sites are churches in each school's community that donate their facility and provide tutors and on-site coordinators. These urban churches are partnered with other metro area (typically suburban) churches to provide additional volunteers and tutors, essentially bringing the resource of people back to the urban neighborhoods where the children live.
