About Wild West Wine & Cider
Wild West Wine and Cider is located on Failand Farm - a small, family-run business rooted in the rolling countryside just outside Bristol. The farm’s journey began on 1st April 2016, when the Stephenson family traded city life for a shot at farming. What started as a somewhat misguided attempt to avoid the hard graft of sheep farming by planting 3,200 vines has since blossomed into an award-winning cider and wine business, shaped by a series of happy (and some not-so-happy) accidents. After a devastating spring frost in 2020 wiped out their first planned wine harvest, the family pivoted, thanks to a generous offer of surplus apples from a neighbouring orchard. With winemaking off the table that year, cider-making became the new path forward. It turns out, they had a knack for it. The business is led by Matt Stephenson, whose long-standing love for fermentation dates back to his schooldays. Alongside him is his partner Philipa, the heart and soul of Failand Farm’s transformation. Under her leadership, the land has been rewilded and nurtured - hedgerows, orchards and woodland planted, dry stone walls restored, and organic certification achieved. She even embraced the original sheep-farming idea, building a small flock on the farm. Matt and Philipa’s son-in-law, Sean Beaton, completed the family circle when he and his wife Molly came for a weekend visit in March 2020 and never left. While cider-making wasn’t part of Sean’s original life plan, his natural flair for the craft has been recognised with multiple awards. When he’s not making cider or chasing after his kids, Sean can be found swimming wild, cycling or running through the countryside. Today, Failand Farm and Wild West Cider continues to grow with deep respect for the land, a touch of humour, and a strong family bond at its core.
