About Wild Woods Restoration Project

We are all-volunteer organization with a mission to restore the health and diversity of our Hudson Valley forests with local native plants grown by volunteers and to inspire a passion for continued stewardship. We are located in the Hudson Valley area of New York outside New York City but also include northern New Jersey in our territory and draw volunteers from a large geographic range. Forests in this region are under many stressors while park systems are seeing reduced funding. The remaining natural areas are shrinking due to development and are under increased pressure. We give people a positive way that they can participate in the preservation and restoration of their local natural areas. We collect seeds of local native plants, sometimes from populations about to be wiped out by development, and teach volunteers how to grow them. The volunteers grow them at home with our support and guidance and return the plants in the fall. It’s a distributed growing model that allows our volunteers develop an attachment to their plants and become invested in their success. We organize volunteer workdays to plant our seedlings in selected restoration sites in local parks. We work closely with parks for permission to collect seed and for the selection of and planning for the restoration site. We offer our services to parks at no charge to enable the restoration work that is so desperately needed.
