About Wildergarden

Wildergarden Inc. is a non-profit organization in central Indianapolis focused on urban habitat restoration and other naturalist projects. The Wildergarden is a 4,015 square-foot residential plot that provides food, water, and shelter to wildlife. After over 30 years of passive restoration, the Wildergarden is now a young forest. The Wildergarden was started by Julia Wilder, its current resident, over 30 years ago. At that time, it was a conventional lawn with few trees. Since then Julia has used a variety of biological management strategies to convert the outdoor space to natural habitat, taking it through an ecological succession from lawn to prairie to forest. The Wildergarden now supports various species and serves as a research and educational hub for people interested in the intersection of humans and their environment. As part of its urban context, Wildergarden Inc. aims to work with neighbors and municipal government workers to better understand how a wild space can fit within the confines of legal regulations and citizens’ concerns. Wildergarden Inc.’s current educational and research goal is to quantify data to evaluate ecological benefit. Wildergarden Inc. was officially organized in February of 2022.
