About Wings Homeless Advocacy

Moving out of homelessness isn’t an event - it’s a journey. Wings focuses on two critical steps in that journey: We help people overcome barriers to housing and employment, and we provide the newly housed with basic needs for health, hygiene, and dignity. Working with case managers from over a dozen support agencies in Santa Cruz County, we connect our volunteers with people experiencing homelessness to help them obtain the resources needed to become housed and self-sufficient. Wings has two programs: the Welcome Home Program and the Vital Docs Program. The Welcome Home program provides the newly housed with basic needs for health, hygiene, and dignity. Sadly most housing programs don’t pay for things like mattresses and bed frames, yet chronic sleep insufficiency contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease and other related metabolic conditions, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. For the many families and individuals that cannot afford crucial household supplies, we provide a mattress, bed frame, mattress protector, sheets, pillows, a blanket, and a basket full of household supplies like toilet paper, a broom & dustpan, dishes, glasses, silverware, bowls, and more. By providing these items we help these households stabilize, which is an important step in remaining housed, especially after long periods of homelessness. Our Welcome Home Packages also mean that people can focus their limited resources on essential needs like food while they work on financial independence. Many of our clients say that they had to choose between food and transportation or a bed and household supplies. Our Vital Docs Program provides people currently experiencing homelessness with birth certificates so they can get jobs, ID, government assistance, housing vouchers, open a bank account, enroll their kids in school, and more. Have identification is absolutely vital for self-sufficiency, health, and economic mobility.
