"The human nervous system allows us to perceive, comprehend, and respond to the world around us. It enables us to to detect and react to internal and external factors that are applied on our body. At WinmarMonitoring we’ve taken mother nature as an example and developed an Optical Fiber nervous system for nautical structures which we simply call the “OF System” . Much like the nervous system, ours is comprised of a brain embodied by our interrogator machine which sends out light beams collecting information through the fibre cables up to the nerves or “sensors” as we call them. Our sensors are built with Fiber Bragg Grating into the core of the fibre and are invisible to the human eye. Simply put, FBG is a microstructure with typically a few millimeters in length that is laser inscribed into the core of a standard single mode fibre. Light is injected into the fibre from the interrogator which in turn passes through and is altered by the movements of the optical grid. Such alterations provide 2D and 3D readings of mechanical and thermal strain, such a process enables us to obtain information such as decay, corrosion, torsion, vibration, pressure, load, displacement and humidity to name a few.
