Witch & Watchman was founded in London, England, in 2014 by artist and designer Helen Wilson. With a background in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins, where she specialized in painting, Helen initially pursued careers in graphic design and as a full-time artist. However, it was the realization that her painting skills could be reimagined through wallpaper design that set her on a new creative path. This inspired the launch of Witch & Watchman’s debut design, Amazonia, a hand-painted wallpaper and fabric that introduced the brand’s distinctive whimsical and eccentric aesthetic. At the heart of Witch & Watchman’s practice lies a fusion of traditional artistry and modern technology. Each motif is meticulously hand-painted in oil on canvas, then digitally scanned and edited to create seamless repeat patterns. The final artworks are produced by a specialist UK printer renowned for its long-standing expertise in luxury wallpaper and fabric printing. The brand’s designs are deeply rooted in a wide spectrum of cultural and artistic inspirations. Old Hollywood glamour, fairy tales, and Film Noir all echo through the collections, with references ranging from Miss Havisham’s decaying home in Great Expectations to the haunting eccentricity of the Addams Family residence, and the faded opulence of Gloria Swanson’s mansion in Sunset Boulevard. Witch & Watchman’s vision is to transform interiors into immersive works of art, bringing fine art out of the frame and into everyday life, adorning walls, upholstering furniture, and turning spaces into richly eccentric galleries.
