About Women Light the World
Women Light the World (WLTW) is a women-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is igniting a women-driven energy revolution. It transforms women from marginalized, last-mile communities into powerful agents of climate action, clean energy access, and sustainable development. We believe energy access is more than electricity—it’s a gateway to dignity, opportunity, and economic independence. Founded in 2018 in New York City by real estate executive Mary Goldsmith-Mahoney, WLTW was born in the remote Himalayan district of Humla, Nepal. This place of breathtaking beauty yet deep-rooted inequity, where electricity was a distant dream, ignited the spark for WLTW, which became a movement! Today, WLTW operates in some of Nepal’s most climate-vulnerable and electrification-deprived regions, where over 10% of the population still lives without power. Our uniquely localized, women-first model equips semi-literate and illiterate women with solar engineering training, technical expertise, digital and financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills. These women—affectionately known as Solar Mamas—don’t just bring light to homes. They light up futures. They install and maintain solar infrastructure, lead enterprises, lead climate action, educate peers, and act as their communities' role models. Our Impact So Far: ● 6 Solar Mamas trained ● 265+ households electrified across Karnali Province ● 2,467+ lives impacted ● 99% reduction in kerosene use ● Improved respiratory health and increased study hours for children ● Empowered women now lead climate conversations in their villages ● Beekeeping livelihoods project with UNDP-Nepal: Beekeeping skill training was completed, and women-led enterprise development is in process. ● Digital and financial literacy training for 22 women entrepreneurs.
