About Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP)
WOVOP started in August 2018 as a Students Talks Program hosted in local secondary schools and universities in Kisumu ,Kenya with an aim of enhancing the understanding of peace, helping to identify threats and issues that undermine peace in learning Institutions (that causes strike and school fires) and the community at large, and most importantly, provide information on how to report and mitigate potential threats. Overtime, through demand and pressure from the local communities, Students Talks grew to a registered CBO in 2019 that presently targets both the students and at-risk community members and works with over 420 volunteers across Kenya with physical presence in Kisumu County. Our primary target population is Girls & young women below 30 years. Our Current Programs: 1.Youth,women,peace & security-We put young women & girls especially at the apex of conflict prevention & resolution through peace leadership, community of practice & inter-generational mentorship. 2.Mental health- We host weekly mental conversations dubbed Mental Fridays live on our socials ,host different survivors of mental Illness from all walks of life who share there experiences and demystify healing. We also host one on one /group art therapy sessions.we believe that World Peace Starts with Inner Peace. 3.Disaster Risk Reduction-In response to the prevailing climate threats, we are keen on elevating the role of women in waste management & food security.
