About Writers' Trust of Canada
The Writers’ Trust of Canada is a charitable organization that seeks to advance, nurture, and celebrate Canadian writers and writing. Writers’ Trust programming is designed to champion excellence in Canadian writing, to improve the status of writers, and to create connections between writers and readers. Writers’ Trust programs include: - Prestigious national literary awards that reward excellence at all career stages and across genres - A scholarship program to advance emerging writers - Canada’s most sought-after writers’ retreat, in Dawson City, Yukon - A literary events program to connect writers and readers - The Woodcock Fund, a one-of-a-kind emergency grant program that has given more than one million dollars to writers in financial crisis Canada’s writers receive more financial support from the Writers’ Trust than from any other private sector organization in the country. This year alone, the Writers’ Trust put over half a million dollars directly into the hands of Canadian writers. The Writers’ Trust was founded in 1976 by five notable and visionary Canadian authors — Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Graeme Gibson, Margaret Laurence, and David Young — to encourage a flourishing writing community in Canada. The Writers’ Trust is proud to continue their work to keep writers writing, to celebrate their achievements, and to enable them to stand at the forefront of Canadian culture.
