About Wychland BioConsulting
Wychland BioConsulting provides services based on Dr Rob Johnson's more than 30 years of experience in the biotechnology industry. Specialising in fermentation and strain improvement, with applications to cost of production, sustainability, quality and process design. Dr Johnson's most recent post was at Quorn Foods, where he designed and supervised the creation of a Fermentation Development Centre. He was involved in the recruitment and training of staff, a variety of external projects (9 PhD students, securing over £1 million in grants with RIs and universities), troubleshooting production issues and optimisation of the Quorn process. Before Quorn, Dr Johnson was with the engineering company WH Partnership, where he provided internal and external consulting on biotech, becoming involved in laboratory and manufacturing facility design. A few highlights as project manager include a 20Mt per year biobutanol concept design using a novel fermenter, a project to create a BOD meter (based upon bioelectrochemistry) that created a working prototype being assessed by the local water authority and a concept design for a multiton vaccines facility. Dr Johnson founded Angel Biotechnology Ltd where he secured, designed and led projects for companies such as P&G, Millipore, Christian Hansen, as well a as number of others. This extended his expertise in fungi, bacteria, and animal cell culture using precision fermentation and biomass fermentation, using classical and GM techniques. Angel was formed from his department at Synpac Pharmaceuticals, at the time the world's largest Penicillin manufacturing site, where he set up a biological development group that generated an annual saving of £2 million against a £30 million turnover. Prior to this he started his career at Beecham Pharmaceuticals with improvements to the productivity of the clavulanic acid production strain
