The 1968 Mexico City Summer Olympics's sensation was an athlete by the name of Dick Fosbury, a civil engineering student from Oregon, who changed the sport of High Jump forever. Unable to master the then popular “straddle method” of high jump, Dick zeroed-in on the key variable of the sport – the center of gravity at the high point of the jump. Higher the center of gravity, greater the gravitational pull and lower the efficiency of muscular effort. After relentless experimentation, observing other athletes, and persisting through several failed efforts, Dick perfected the technique called the “Fosbury Flop”, a revolutionary new side-running back-first method which won him the gold medal in the 1968 games. Every High Jump athlete since then uses the Fosbury Flop technique.
