About Zambia Orphans Aid UK
Life is tough for children in Zambia. At Zambia Orphans Aid, we believe a world is possible where every child grows up healthy, safe and educated - playing, learning and looking to the future filled with curiosity. But, right now, poverty levels are rising. Zambian children are struggling in our increasingly unequal world, with 60% living in poverty, denied their fundamental right to life’s most basic building blocks - education, safety, healthcare and nutrition. Zambia Orphans Aid UK is a charity working with and for children and young people in Zambia, in partnership with our sister charities - ZOA-Zambia and ZOA-US. We focus on education, but recognise that, for a child to participate effectively, they must have access to good nutrition, child protection, good health and wellbeing, clean water, sanitation and hygiene. With almost 20 years’ experience we continue to adapt, do what is right and meet the evolving needs of children and their communities. Zambia is one of the most deprived and unequal countries where life is particularly difficult for the 4.6 million children living in extreme poverty. In 2022, 64.3% of the population, approximately 12.6 million people, were living on less than USD $2.15 per day. That same year, Zambia recorded a Gini inequality index of 51.5, well above The World Bank’s high-inequality threshold of 40. This ranks Zambia as the 4th most unequal country in Africa and 6th globally. In contrast, other resource-rich countries with similar inequality levels have significantly lower poverty rates. Working in partnership with grassroots community schools Zambia Orphans Aid helps to find sustainable solutions to the challenges that children and young people face. Education is a proven route out of poverty and remains our primary focus.
